Does your Doctor Prescribe Exercise? 👨🏻⚕️
Does your Doctor prescribe exercise?🤷🏼♀️
I'm struggling to wrap my head around this for nearly 5 years now and genuinely trying to find out where we are as a majority on this.😕
I've had 2 clients approach me worried about training as their Doctor or healthcare professional has reacted worryingly about the fact they are exercising...
Furthermore the healthcare professional has advised against exercising with no legitimate reason or explanation given to the patient. 🤔
***DISCLAIMER: I will never ever go against a Doctors or healthcare professionals medical advice. Nor should any client or anyone reading this***
One of the clients who reacted so poorly to their Doctors reaction is now scared to exercise at all.
With her condition she needs to exercise and all research points to exercising. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
N.B.
My main problem here is that the patient was never given an educational explanation to how it may be dangerous.
Even when asked for an explanation responses ranged between 'It's just too risky'. ❌
To:
'I wouldn't do that if I was you.' 🤓
However, lets redirect this charade..
Is the issue that there is no current trust in the fitness industry?
Is it on us as individuals to make our own decisions as clients and patients?
Or what is your opinion? ❓❓❓
Orrrrrr.... is it that those with the qualifications, experience and skills, to work with these people (me and other highly qualified coaches) are not marketing themselves correctly and getting "out-marketed". Is there even an awareness that these highly experienced coaches here in Ireland actually exist. 👂🏼
Personally I think the highly skilled coaches have a responsibility to "out-market" the rest of the fitness industry (Yes I know great businesses are mainly developed through word of mouth). However i'm speaking further than the four walls we work from here.
👀How do you know a coach is a good coach? 👀
'A coach is a good coach when you know you can send your own mother to them.'
In Dublin off the top of my head I can think of 10 coaches (not gyms) in Malahide, 3 in Glasnevin, 6 in Clontarf area, 8 in Town, 8 on the Southside (those of who I know of who id happily let train my mother). But even as coaches can you name them?👩🏾🔧
However which of us coaches seek to design a service that gives more than it takes in value. 💵💰💵
When I say give I don't mean give to your current paying customers.
How much value are we prepared to give to those who will never invest a cent in our services?
Yet they might take a nugget of information and start their own fitness journey in their own local area with a coach who has similar principles and professionalism to ours. 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️
But here i'm digressing from the main point.
In both cases of both clients who where told to avoid exercising within our facilities I can safely say they are well able to perform sub maximal training utilising a rehab approach (Basic glute and shoulder ROM work) followed with monitoring systems we have put in place and have made great improvements on their health markers (Blood pressure, Cholesterol etc).
But now they're doing nothing or less because of medical advice.
However... What is your experience with your healthcare professional?
What do WE need to do as exercise professionals.
In my opinion... WE as exercise professionals and gym owners need to raise our standards again. To come together and design PROFESSIONAL businesses from the outset. Have systems in place that run a business efficiently.
Not post posts like this.
We need to improve as an industry.
Meet other industries at their level and stop making romantic excuses about our "gyms".
P.S
I've seen the industry shifting for the better in the last 2 years.
I know of one person in particular who has taken the bull by the horns and begun to merge both sides of the industry while still holding their own principles.
So can the rest of us but we cant do it alone.
